Evans Distribution Systems Talks to WSJ About Potential Impact of Rising Tariffs

MELVINDALE, MICH., JANUARY 10, 2025—Evans Distribution Systems, a leading provider of third-party logistics and supply chain solutions, was featured in the Wall Street Journal about the potential impact of rising tariffs on Detroit’s local economy and businesses.

The article paints a picture of life in two of the busiest border towns if 25% tariffs were to be imposed on all Canadian and Mexican imports by incoming President Donald Trump. He also claimed to place an additional 10% tariff on Chinese imports.

The article places a special focus on Detroit—a city with an active border crossing and an automotive manufacturing hub. According to the article, “about $173 billion in goods crossed through the Detroit port that year [2023].” With billions of dollars moving across the border and the opening of the International Gordie Howe Bridge, the stakes are raised in a city like Detroit.

John A. Evans, president and CEO, pointed to the benefit of Foreign Trade Zone warehousing as a way bring goods into the U.S. and defer duties until the goods are released. Since the 1980s, Evans has provided FTZ space and currently operates more than 1 million square feet of FTZ designated facilities.

According to the Census Data, the U.S., Canada, Mexico and China were the top trading partners in the world with 41.2% in October 2024. Experts say the top goods traded between the nations include cars and car parts, petroleum, electronics and agriculture.
