Spring has sprung and it’s time to get your warehouse in order. Now is the time to clean, reorganize, to ensure a safe, and efficient warehouse for the busy summer season. As new customers and existing customers increase and decrease volumes, it’s always worthwhile to assess areas that are underutilized.
Review & Reorganize
- As goods shift over time, it’s always a good idea to review your space utilization. This allows warehouses to make the most of their space and bring on more customers.
- Eliminate honeycombing – As products move in and out of the warehouse it generates empty space, known as honeycombing. Products need to be moved to fill that space and free up underutilized space. But products also need to be organized, either by SKU or turn so that they are easy to locate.
- Out with the old, in with the new! Go through everything stored in your warehouse. Throw out old inventory, boxes, outdated equipment, or any unused items.
- Optimize Workflow: Arrange tools and materials based on frequency of use. Place high-demand items closer to the work areas for efficiency.
Deep Clean
- Sweep and Mop: Clean floors thoroughly, especially in areas where dust and debris accumulate. Consider using industrial cleaning equipment for larger spaces.
- Remove Dust and Debris: Warehouses are known for accumulating dust and debris. Remove dust from shelves, racks, and storage bins. Pay attention to the tops of shelves, where dust can accumulate.
- Clean Windows and Light Fixtures: Dirty windows can block light and make your warehouse look dirty. Clean or replace light fixtures to ensure optimal lighting.
- Sanitize High-Touch Areas: Clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces like door handles, switches, conveyors, bathrooms, tape machines and more.
Check for Maintenance Issues
- Inspect Equipment: Check machinery, forklifts, or any equipment for wear and tear. Schedule repairs or replacements if needed.
- Inspect Building: With a flurry of activity and people flowing through warehouses every day, facilities become run down. Look for signs of leaks, spills, or broken glass.
Review Safety Protocols
- Inspect Fire Safety Equipment: Check that fire extinguishers, alarms, and sprinklers are in working order. Ensure that fire exits are clear of obstructions.
- Check Your AEDs and First Aid Kits: You never know when someone goes into cardiac arrest or experiences a serious injury in the warehouse. Make sure \safety materials are up to date and ready to be put into action.
- Review Safety Signage: Ensure that safety signs are visible, and hazardous areas are properly marked. Check your evacuation signage, exit signs, and other important signs that can reduce accidents and injuries.
Dispose and Recycle
- Properly Dispose of Waste: Safely dispose of any waste, dunnage, chemicals, or damaged items according to environmental regulations.
- Recycle: Separate recyclable materials like cardboard, plastic, or metal from the waste for recycling.
By following these steps, your warehouse will not only look cleaner but will function more efficiently, improving safety and productivity for everyone working there.
